Update on USPTO’s provisions for Japanese searching authority

Yesterday I blogged about how the choice of the Japanese searching authority for filers in RO/US seemed not to be well supported by USPTO in EFS-Web.  The EFS-Web page for payment of search fees did not list a choice for ISA/JP.  I reported that the USPTO’s Electronic Business Center (EBC) agreed it was missing and suggested that the way to pay the fee was to fax in Form 2038.

Now there is news from a nice person at the USPTO.

The news from a nice person at USPTO is that if only you know where to click, you can actually pay the ISA/JP search fee in EFS-Web.  Here’s how.

isa-jp-fee-1The key is that the ISA/JP search fee is not listed with the six other ISA search fees.  Instead you have to click on “Newly Added Fees”.  When you click there, you see this screen:isa-jp-fee-2

On this page your first task is to decide how many ISA/JP fees you want to pay. The correct answer is always “1”. So enter “1” in the quantity field.  Then click “continue”.

It’s a bit of a surprise that when I called the EBC yesterday about this, they did not know to suggest clicking on “Newly Added Fees”.

Anyway, yes, this means you can actually pay the ISA/JP fee in EFS-Web.  Thanks again to the nice USPTO person who passed along this filing tip.
