Canada has joined the Madrid Protocol. The Protocol will enter into force for Canada on June 17, 2019.
Canada deposited its Instrument of Accession on March 17, 2019. This brings to 104 the number of members of the Madrid system.
Canada thus achieves the trifecta, having joined the PCT on January 2, 1990 and and having joined the Hague Agreement on November 5, 2018.
The two-letter code for Canada is “CA”.
Starting from June 17, a trademark owner in Canada can file a Madrid Protocol application to pursue protection in one or more Offices outside of Canada. And starting from that date, a trademark owner outside of Canada can file a Subsequent Designation to Canada (or can file a new Madrid Protocol application designating Canada).
