A few days ago was my first-ever successful DMR (digital mobile radio) activity (blog article).  Today was my second — I participated in a World Wide Check-In

It will be recalled that DMR is a communications protocol used by radio amateurs to speak with each other all around the world, using handheld transceivers.  Participants use “talk groups” to organize their communications.  One popular talk group is Talk Group 91 on the Brandmeister network.

A nine-year-old tradition takes place every Saturday at 1600 UTC on Talk Group 91.  Radio amateurs all around the world participate in what is called the World Wide Check-In.

Yesterday I participated in the World Wide Check-In.  The way this works is that a Net Controller (NCO) moderates the discussion.  The NCO talks through each continent of the world one by one, and within each continent the NCO talks through various countries one by one.  My turn came near when the NCO reached North America and then reached the United States.  When it was my turn, I pressed the push-to-talk button on my transceiver and said my radio amateur call sign which is “AA2KW”.  Shortly later the NCO acknowledged my check-in.

The NCO who checked me in was a radio amateur named Johnny who was in Brazil.

A few hours after the WWCI concluded, its log got published as you can see here.  The log is quoted above with a highlight on my call sign “AA2KW”.

As you can see, 608 hams checked in from 57 countries on six continents.  I was among the 205 hams in the US that checked in.
