I am intrigued to hear about a WIPO initiative called the “Global IP Assignment Platform” (GIPAP). I suggest that interested practitioners and IP owners register for one of these upcoming WIPO webinars.
Imagine being able to do a few mouse clicks that would result in an assignment (ownership change) taking effect across many patent offices or trademark offices or design protection offices. (The alert reader realizes that this happy situation already obtains for Madrid Protocol trademark registrations.) Imagine my astonishment (in a good way) to hear that WIPO has an initiative underway to try make this work for IP assets broadly.
Here is what I received recently from a nice person at WIPO:
Recognizing the importance of global assignment within the IP industry, the International Bureau of WIPO has been actively working on GIPAP [“Global IP Assignment Platform”] for all WIPO member states. This platform aims to streamline assignment filing procedures related to patents, trademarks, and industrial designs via a centralized system.
Based on our analysis of requirements and processes across various IP offices, we have created a prototype for GIPAP together with a proposed workflow. Before proceeding with full development, we invite you to participate in webinars dedicated to the prototype, where your feedback will be invaluable in refining the platform features.
The webinars, delivered in English without interpretation, will last approximately one hour and include a brief demonstration of the prototype (40 minutes) followed by a Q&A session (20 minutes). To accommodate different time zones, three sessions with identical content are scheduled as follows (CEST):
